Doing my morning CL surfing when !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! appeared. It’s a 944, “Smog exempt” because it’s a “diesel.” Not knowing what to expect, I read the ad. Is this another CP? Or is it the most Jalop Parsh?

Kinja'd!!!

At first glance, this appears to be a 944 with a wide body kit and some other modifications (steelies!) Looking through the pictures, it looks like a solid vehicle. Reading the ad, though, is something else.

Let’s analyze it:

1984 porsche 944

Tags are up to date expires January $85 bucks no smog

This seems pretty standard for a car of this caliber and price, but...

Regular Gas was diesel gas before

I’m going to come back to this, as the syntax is ambiguous. It’s important though.

Clean tittle

Tee. Hee. Realistically I was expecting it to be salvage, but a clean title is very good for a car at this price.

Stick shift

This is important to acknowledge. It wouldn’t have shown up in my search otherwise. No interior pics so no way to verify, but I think I trust this bit.

Kinja'd!!!

I actually dig the rear lip spoiler

NO MORE SMOG CAR WAS MADE DIESEL SO YOU CAN DO A ENGINE SWAP I HAVE ALL THE PAPER WORK TO PROVE IT

The Volkswagen in the room, folks. This is a 944 that’s been converted to diesel fuel (how?) Is it a new engine? Spark plugs removed and compression increased? Something else entirely? The “Regular Gas was diesel gas before“ line doesn’t help us at all in deducing what exactly was done to this vehicle to grant it “Diesel” status. Let’s read on:

car has a wide body kit $3,000

(NEEDS FUEL PUMP)

So it’s clearly an incomplete project. A red flag for sure, but I’m too intrigued to simply close the ad and move on with my life. I want a diesel 944 to be a real thing...

I’M JUST SELLING THE BODY THE CAR IS COMPLETE JUST THAT I WAS GOING TO DO A LS swap BUT I BOUGHT A CAMARO YOU CAN BUY THIS CAR TO RACE IT OR WATEVER YOU WANNA DO TO IT THE CAR HAS MONEY INTO TO IT ALREADY I CAN’T KEEP GOTTA GET RID OF IT

Okay. Time for some next-level literary analysis here. The phrase “just selling the body” is directly adjacent to “the car is complete,” a jarring juxtaposition that opens up a number of questions. Is the whole car being sold, or just the body? If it’s “complete,” then why does it need a fuel pump?

Kinja'd!!!

“LS swap” done by //AMG = AutoMatic Gearbox

Then we reach the point of no return. LS swap. It looks like our seller was smart, and bought a car that presumably makes the “swap” part of LS swap unnecessary. (Can those two words ever be apart? It’s like how VTEC requires a “yo” afterwards...) Though the seller misspelled “Camero,” there’s clearly some logic in this.

I WANT 3,000 OBO

DON’T TRY TO LOW BALL ME BCUZ I KNOW THIS CAR IS WORTH IT IF UR GOING TO RACE IT YOU DON’T SEE THESES CAR ON THE STREET A LOT

Wrapping up, it’s clear that this project was intended to be fast. The question of the diesel powerplant remains completely unanswered.

3,000 obo

Nice price, or crack pipe? Crack diesel exhaust pipe? VW CP OMG?

I think the concept of a diesel 944 would be a very Jalop Swap* but I have a feeling that’s not what’s going on here.

That’s one of the least coherent CL ads I’ve read. Which is an impressive feat, actually.

It looks like a fairly involved project, which makes it all the more surprising that it’s documented so haphazardly.

Authored by meth.

I came away not knowing if it even had an engine, and if so, whether the engine was diesel or gas, let alone the engine source or number of cylinders but whatever, I guess?

Others will know better than me, but I think the rear lip spoiler is factory.

Apparently you can plunk a diesel into older vehicles, have a cali dmv referee or vin officer inspect it, and go about your merry way without having to pass emissions.

So either this thing was successfully swapped to diesel and inspected and registered as such, or they found a state official willing to play ball without ever actually inspecting the vehicle.

Since the reg expires in January, who knows? Perhaps it would need to be reinspected. Perhaps the diesel is dead or was yanked in preparation for the ellis swap. Perhaps without a functional diesel installed it would no longer qualify as a smog exempt vehicle and the seller now wants to unload it.

All I know is that the Cummins from the Ram can apparently push 1000 ft-lbs of torque with just an ecu reflash... which could be fun.

...if only the seller were functionality literate.

Maybe he’s like a car Rainman, horrible with grammar but an artist with a wrench and diesel swaps.

Probably not though.

What possible benefit could there be to converting a Porsche sports car to diesel? Torque? Did they really just want it to be smog exempt or whatever?

My guess: A diesel was swapped in, it was inspected by CARB, proven to be a diesel with the correct emissions equipment for that engine, so the title was changed to diesel fuel type, and due to being older than MY1998, declared emissions exempt.

Then, based on “Regular Gas was diesel gas before“, a gas engine was swapped back in (I’ve heard of people calling diesel fuel “diesel gas” before)? And then that’s been pulled out, because it’s just the body?

I actually have aims to put a 4cyl VW turbo in a 924 some day. Better mileage, more torque by a good bit, more reliable, fairly easy to do, no weight difference. Perversely, it kind of makes it a better sports car.

“Diesel Gas” is a phrase I can try to understand, but I just get immensely confused when I try to dissect it. Diesel != Gas.

That sounds like a good guess though. The lack of any pictures under the hood is quite annoying, I want to see a diesel in a 944...

A lot of people in the US use “gas” as interchangeable with “fuel”.

So, you have unleaded gas, mid-grade gas, premium gas, and diesel gas, in these peoples’ minds.

And, yes, these people also misfuel their diesels a lot, by thinking of it as gas. (One exercise commonly done on TDIClub is to excise “gas” from your vocabulary, replacing it with “fuel”, which forces you to think more about what you’re putting in.)

I think there was some crack involved in writing this ad. I think the diesel swap then back to gasoline or no engine is what happened. What engine would you swap in? Ideally I’d want to swap in a Porsche H6 or V8, but cost wise a WRX, SRT-4, or Evo turbo 4 could be a fun swap.

OK, I had my friend text this guy, because this is just too good not to. Apparently he’s convinced that the car had a diesel stock and has been converted to a gas engine. The engine is just a stock 2.5 liter 944 engine.

The thing the guy didn’t mention is... well, incredible really. I present, the interior. I’m not joking this is the photo he sent.
